We crossed this bridge with the camper just a few short weeks ago.

It’s an historic, skinny old steel bridge. I could just see Model T’s crossing it in my mind’s eye. It’s very narrow with a kink (like the old Chain of Rocks Bridge near Cahokia Mounds in EC IL).

We have crossed this bridge several times over the years. It leads to the weird, mostly abandoned city of Cairo IL (pronounced Kay-RO). I like that route because Cairo is like a movie set from The Walking Dead. It was once planning on being the largest city in IL. It still has rows of Victorian manses on cobblestone streets. It also has decay and ornate turn of the century buildings covered in crippling vines. It’s absolutely fascinating and a little spooky. I’ve written about it before. It’s a good gateway route from home into KY for us. Well, it was.

Suddenly taking it out of commission is going to cut off that part of IL for all intents and purposes. It will be a long drive around to find a bridge over the rivers anyway.

I’m wondering if this stretch is a part of all the New Madrid movements that have been happening lately. If so, hold on to your hats folks, change is a coming’.
